Reality television, dominating the tube right now, is about the behavior of real people in various situations where they are insulted and humiliated. The irony in these shows is that they are all staged which clearly shows that reality shows are unreal. Unscripted dramas are like sports. Reality programs are cheap to produce and are also popular with viewers as the programs can be unpredictable and people are often nosy. This erases the boundaries between the public & private. This is a great and new way of telling a story and the audience can easily identified the themes which makes reality television so profitable. These programs will always have a place on television, but the prospects for it are dim when the viewers runs out of idea and the viewers becomes bored, it will ruin reputation of network, there will also be other competition when other forms of programs will be created.

Draft5

Athula was a very smart child. He was a top student in his school and a very hardworking person too. Everyday after school, he would help out his parents out in the tea plantation, followed by studies. His wish was that he could enter the top university and given his parents a good future ahead. He had a very good friend whose name was Asanka. They would play with each other whenever they had free time.

Things took a change for the worst after the Sinhalese took over Sri Lanka in 1948; they brought in the Ceylon Citizenship Act Of 1948. Athula’s family was now having difficulties as they were not entitled to things like education and voting for the countries, as their forefathers were not born here. Despite being dropped out of school, Athula still worked hard to study as he wants to fulfill his dreams of entering the university. His friend, Asanka would come to his house occasionally to tell Athula what they had learned, so Athula could revise. His parents continue to work in the plantation. Life went on as normal.

Athula secretly went to meet Asanka; “Why do the Sinhala implement such atrocious rules, making so many Tamils stateless!” Athula asked, pacing up and down.

Asanka murmured “I have no idea but it has made life much more peaceful, I don’t wish for it to end.”

Athula shouted backed in a furious rage “Do you know what it has done to my fellow Tamils, it has turned their life upside down, some Tamils were pinning all their hope on the child to give them a better future and you Sinhala started to expelled us one by one from school, I don’t see it making our life much more peaceful.”

Asanka could not bear to hear it anymore and ran off before Athula could say anything. Athula started to feel regretful; it was not Asanka’s fault why did I have to shout at him. He could not change what he had done so he turned off to another direction and started walking away. Athula had tried to find his friend and apologized to him, after much effort he tracked downed Asanka and started to explain what was really happening on that day, with that Athula managed to fix a broken friendship back together again.

Athula’s siblings were forced out of their job one day; Athula being curious went to ask his father what had happened to them.

“Athula, your siblings have gotten fire because they can’t speak Sinhala, also regarding to this agenda, we may have to send you to work earlier before you can attend your university” boomed Athula’s father.

Athula was devastated, he murmured “how can it happened, what about my dreams, I have to give up my dreams because of the Sinhalese, No way!” he slammed his bedroom door.

He continued to disobey his parents and studied day and night. He is awaiting the day for his exam to come. When he took his exam, he was full of confidence, while other pupils mostly Sinhalese was shaking with fear; others had butterflies in their stomach. The exams results were out, Athula scored 4A2 and 3B3, and he was confident that he could get into the university. But in the midst of the excitement, he was shot down. He saw Sinhalese entering the university, but he was stopped at the university‘s gate cause his points did not make the criteria. While the Sinhalese only scored about 4B4 and 4B3 and was able to enter the university, this got Athula’s blood boiling.

Athula then ran away from home as he was too ashamed to admit the truth. He went all around Sri Lanka and saw many Tamils homeless. This sight made him remember about his family. Thus he continued on the road with a heavy heart. A few months later, something made Athula tears rolled down uncontrollably. He saw his family living in the dumpster. Athula could not stand how the Sinhalese was treating the Tamils and went to join a federation, called the, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. He went around killing any Sinhalese he could get his hand on, sometimes, Athula even tortured the small kids. He was so bent on revenge that nothing stood in his way.

In the midst of the chaos, Athula was walking around trying to find Sinhalese to tortured, when he saw Asanka quivering in fear in a corner of the house, Athula’s tears rolled down when he pointed the gun on Asanka forehead. With a loud bang, Athula just took away his best friends life. Without any regret he thrusts his life forward till he was shot down when he was off guard

Draft4

Athula was walking home from school with his friend, Asanka. Asanka was a Sinhalese while Athula was a Tamil. They were best of friends. One day, Athula was working in the tea plantation, with his parents, when Asanka came over to pay a visit to Athula. They were living their lives happily.

A few years later, Athula was still working as a tea plantation worker after Sri Lanka gained their owned independence. When the British were still in control, they favored the Tamils more than the Sinhalese. After the British left, The Sinhalese took over and thus many numbers of Tamils were retrenched due to their incapability of speaking Sinhala. There was also this problem which made Tamils all over Sri Lanka stateless; this was due to the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948, this was unfair to the Athula’s family as their forefather were not born here. Now, Athula could not get any basic rights such as education and voting

In 1951, Athula’s family was forced to move to another smaller part of the country along with all the other Tamils. The Sinhalese was pushing things overboard; they forced the Tamils to move out of what was once their land. Despite being furious, they could not do anything as they did not have the power, and things worsen as children had to work to support their own family. Asanka still visits Athula from time to time. Even with all these problems, they were still best of friends.

Athula asked his friends Arjuna, “Do you think that the Sinhalese has gone overboard by making Sinhala the official language?”

Arjuna pacing up and down replied “Do you think, The Sinhalese made my whole family suffered, my father who was actually able to be promoted, but was not chosen because he could not speak Sinhala!”

Athula later went to meet his old friend, Asanka. On the way there, there was a huge riot, gunshots were heard, corpse were all over the place, he then saw his parents trapped in the middle, later, Athula parents saw that Athula was about to be shot, they dived in and saved Athula, but with the sacrifices of themselves. Athula dropped to his kneels and tears rolled down his cheek uncontrollably in the midst of the chaos. After which he went back to find Arjuna and told him about what happened to his parents that afternoon.

Arjuna comforted him by patting on his back and saying “It’s ok, we were get our revenge on them don’t you worry.”

7 years later, Athula took part in the exams and got high scores; while on the other hand, a Sinhalese took part in the same examination, the Sinhalese manage to get to the university while Athula having a even higher scores did not get into the university thus this prove the biasness of the Sinhalese. Now, the Tamils really could not stand it anymore. Athula heard a group of people who formed an army calling themselves the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Athula not thinking twice went straight to join the army. His only motives were to kill all the Sinhalese as to get freedom and also to avenge his passed on parents. He also gathered many Tamils, age ranging from 8 to 12 and even asks Arjuna to join in the fight.

Athula was killing many Sinhalese. He tortured many of them as he deemed that this is the only way to help those Tamils that had suffered for so long, but one Sinhalese made him stop, due to a twist of fate he met Asanka on the battlefield.
