Athula was walking home from school with his friend, Asanka. Asanka was a Sinhalese while Athula was a Tamil. They were best of friends. One day, Athula was working in the tea plantation, with his parents, when Asanka came over to pay a visit to Athula. They were living their lives happily.
A few years later, Athula was still working as a tea plantation worker after Sri Lanka gained their owned independence. When the British were still in control, they favored the Tamils more than the Sinhalese. After the British left, The Sinhalese took over and thus many numbers of Tamils were retrenched due to their incapability of speaking Sinhala. There was also this problem which made Tamils all over Sri Lanka stateless; this was due to the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948, this was unfair to the Athula’s family as their forefather were not born here. Now, Athula could not get any basic rights such as education and voting
In 1951, Athula’s family was forced to move to another smaller part of the country along with all the other Tamils. The Sinhalese was pushing things overboard; they forced the Tamils to move out of what was once their land. Despite being furious, they could not do anything as they did not have the power, and things worsen as children had to work to support their own family. Asanka still visits Athula from time to time. Even with all these problems, they were still best of friends.
Athula asked his friends Arjuna, “Do you think that the Sinhalese has gone overboard by making Sinhala the official language?”
Arjuna pacing up and down replied “Do you think, The Sinhalese made my whole family suffered, my father who was actually able to be promoted, but was not chosen because he could not speak Sinhala!”
Athula later went to meet his old friend, Asanka. On the way there, there was a huge riot, gunshots were heard, corpse were all over the place, he then saw his parents trapped in the middle, later, Athula parents saw that Athula was about to be shot, they dived in and saved Athula, but with the sacrifices of themselves. Athula dropped to his kneels and tears rolled down his cheek uncontrollably in the midst of the chaos. After which he went back to find Arjuna and told him about what happened to his parents that afternoon.
Arjuna comforted him by patting on his back and saying “It’s ok, we were get our revenge on them don’t you worry.”
7 years later, Athula took part in the exams and got high scores; while on the other hand, a Sinhalese took part in the same examination, the Sinhalese manage to get to the university while Athula having a even higher scores did not get into the university thus this prove the biasness of the Sinhalese. Now, the Tamils really could not stand it anymore. Athula heard a group of people who formed an army calling themselves the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Athula not thinking twice went straight to join the army. His only motives were to kill all the Sinhalese as to get freedom and also to avenge his passed on parents. He also gathered many Tamils, age ranging from 8 to 12 and even asks Arjuna to join in the fight.
Athula was killing many Sinhalese. He tortured many of them as he deemed that this is the only way to help those Tamils that had suffered for so long, but one Sinhalese made him stop, due to a twist of fate he met Asanka on the battlefield.

Athula was going out to the tea plantation to work.
“Mum I heading out now to the fields to help.” Shouting excitedly
Athula was only 4 then; He had to go to schools in the morning and in the afternoon, helps his parents out at the field. Life was peaceful. Everyone one was happy the way it is.
In 2 years time, everything changes. Athula was still living life as per normal, Arjuna, his father who had been saving money for a long time wanted to give his family a better place to stay, so he went to applied for a new house, together with his good Sinhalese friend. Months later, his Sinhalese friends got the house but on the other hand Arjuna application for a new house was rejected because of the Ceylon Citizenship Act, this actually meant that citizenship was only passed to those who were born in Sri Lanka or those whose forefathers were born here. To make matter worse Arjuna’ family was declared stateless.
Athula comforted Arjuna. Athula said “no matter what house we live in, we were always be a happy family.”
“You are very understanding, let’s just continue our life as the way it was.” Arjuna said.
In 1956, things toke a turn for the worst, one day, posters was placed all over the place saying that their official language had been change to Sinhala; Athula was speechless when he saw the posters. He soon met a guy who was very depressed, he had no idea how to speak Sinhala, and just like that he was fired from the government service. Soon after that rioting took place, Athula and his family was caught in the middle of the riots and both his parents were killed in the midst of the chaos. Athula fell to his kneels and tears rolled down his cheeks uncontrollably. The riot ended but many had loss their lives. Athula later spotted a small kid sobbing all by his own; he went there and asks what had happened.
The boy said” My name is Asanka; both of my parent were killed in the riots.”
Athula later learned that Asanka was actually a Sinhalese. Both of them took care of each other as though they were brothers. Later on in years, both of the wanted to enter the best university in Sri Lanka, cause they wanted to have a better future. Both of them studied and worked hard to accomplish their dreams of entering the university. Days later, the results were out. Athula scored 4A1 and 3B4 while Asanka scored 2A1, 2A2, 3C5, and the most unimaginable happened, Asanka managed to get into the university while Athula even having a better result than Asanka was rejected as he did meet the criteria.
Athula was feeling very disturbed at this biasness for the university admission. He told Asanka that he wanted to be alone for a while and left Asanka to fend for himself. Asanka felt that he was all alone again so he went to interact with other Sinhalese and soon after forgot all about Athula.
Athula was wandering all over Sri Lanka by himself, He learnt about the wide scale resettlement which involves forcing out the Tamils for the poorer Sinhalese who could not afford the houses and leaves the Tamils homeless. But he also heard of the Tamil United Liberation Front, so he started to join this federation, and fight for the Tamil’s freedom. They went around wreaking havoc all over the place. Athula killed many Sinhalese for revenge because he thinks it was them who cause the riots that day, and it was them who killed his parents.

SINGAPORE FLYER
Singapore Flyer is a giant Ferris wheel located in Singapore. At a height of 165m, Singapore Flyer is the world’s largest Giant Observation Wheel and is set to be one of Asia’s biggest tourist attractions. Featuring fixed capsules the size of a bus, the spectacular monument is capable of holding up to 784 passengers. Each capsule has a 28 person capacity and each revolution takes approximately 30 minutes. This was the first time I was going up on that observation wheel, but due to its time to time malfunction I was a little afraid of the ride. The Singapore flyer, itself holds many shops within this fascinating building.
The Singapore flyer was outstanding as it was the tallest building around the area. The place was filled with tourist wanting to go on this exhilarating ride. But to my surprise the ride’s duration was just right as we were making our way to the capsules; we had to take a group photo. After which we went through a security check which was very similar to those in the airports. We were also able to see all sorts of attractions like, Marina Barrage, Esplanade and the Merlion.
When the capsules started to ascend, I looked at all the landmarks and our attraction that sight was a thing to behold. Everything looked so small from above. I could barely see the Merlion. I was captivated by the beauty of the blue sea. Things for me was at the beginning of the ride was a little bit bumpy, I dare not peep through the window of the capsule at all, It was only after a few minutes that I picked up my courage to see through the window. When I first saw it, I was at a loss for word as the scenery was really beautiful, after which, I started to take pictures of our landmarks and we later took a group photo in the capsules. I will remember that for the year. The ride was very soothing as we went up slowly not like on the streets, where we have to rush through almost everything.
There was a funny thing that happened on the way up. Those person who was initially scared was totally not frightened when we reach the top. They were always exclaiming how scared they would be when they reach the top but they were not even the list scared when we reached the top, ironic right.
This trip was very enjoyable as we were even given free time to explore the shops in the flyer itself we went through shops after shops and saw many different things that were up for sales that were let you remember the trips. On whole I would like to recommend this to other people who want a bird eye view of Singapore.
